Two giant wooden chessmen, commissioned from Stephen Hayward by Uig Community Council. They are one and a half tonne replicas of the famed Lewis Chessmen: 93 walrus ivory pieces, most likely carved in Norway in the twelfth century, that were found on a nearby beach by Malcolm MacLeod in 1831 and are now split between the British Museum, London and the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.
The first statue stands outside Uig Museum (plotted on the map) and the second stands at Ardroil Bay, near the original findspot of the hoard.
